“No escurinho do cinema” – Cinematic memories of São Paulo and Buenos Aires
Directed by Cecilia Gil Mariño, Sonia Sasiain, and Research Group Historia de los Públicos de Cine de Buenos Aires / Editing by Alejandro Espolsino / Subtitling by Celina Wolffelt
Synopsis
In the 1940s and 1950s, going to the cinema was not just entertainment. This experience was part of how societies shaped their socio-cultural practices and forms of identification. Cinema at that time played a crucial role in the processes of subjectivation of eroticism, love, sexuality, and even identity for these people. Additionally, cinema theaters constituted “contexts of conviviality,” a being with others, where interactions occurred, both integrating and negotiating inter-class, inter-ethnic, inter-generational, and gender tensions between unequal and diverse groups. How do these memories still resonate in these bodies and societies?
“No escurinho do cinema” Cinematic memories of São Paulo and Buenos Aires consists of three audiovisual essays in partnership with the research group Historia de los públicos de cine de Buenos Aires (under the direction of Clara Kriger) from the Institute of Arts of Espectáculo of the Universidad de Buenos Aires and Mecila (Maria Sibylla Merian Centre Conviviality-Inequality in Latin America), collecting memories of people who watched films in cinemas between the 1940s and 1950s with excerpts from iconic films, photographic archives, period press, and newsreel archives, in an affective editing process.
