Recent Brazilian cinema productions in the spotlight at Cinusp

Pró-Reitoria de Cultura e Extensão Universitária - 04/12/2023

The free program includes movies released a few months ago and previews, including fiction and documentaries

By Fabio Rubira

Until April 30, the Cinema da USP (Cinusp) is presenting the 11th edition of the Novíssimo Cinema Brasileiro showcase. The selection, based on extensive research, includes national films that premiered between 2021 and 2023.

There are 14 feature films in the regular program, as well as previews, debates, and a special session of short films.

Medida Provisória, which marks Lázaro Ramos’ directorial debut, deals with racism in Brazil in a didactic way, with blacks being deported under the excuse of ‘historical reparation’.

Chosen as the Brazilian representative at this year’s Oscars, Marte Um, by Gabriel Martins, tells the story of a black family from the outskirts of Contagem, in Minas Gerais, who try to keep their dreams alive in a country that has just elected a far-right president.

Mato Seco em Chamas, by Adirley Queirós and Joana Pimenta, mixes fiction with reality, based on the unexpected intervention of real-life events in some moments of the film, with the performance of ex-convicts. The group of women work in clandestine oil detour and refining in the Sol Nascente community in Ceilândia, in the Distrito Federal.

The documentary Amigo Secreto, by director Maria Augusta Ramos, reveals the unfolding of Operation Car Wash after former judge Sérgio Moro joined the Bolsonaro government.

And Turma da Mônica: Lições, by Maurício de Sousa Produções, explores the maturing of the characters, focusing on individual issues and developments.

According to the curators, these and other productions “attest the resilience, strength, and power of our cinema”.
