On September 14, 15 and 16, 2023, USP’s Butantã campus will host the 17th edition of the Feira USP e as Profissões. The initiative of Pró-Reitoria de Cultura e Extensão Universitária da USP (PRCEU) is aimed at high school students and those taking courses to prepare for the entrance exam. Participation is completely free. To speed up entry, those interested can register in advance at uspprofissoes.usp.br.
The event returned to the University City in 2022, bringing the students closer to the teaching units, museums, and laboratories on campus and also to the environment that the future university student might find as a student.
“The Feira USP e as Profissões is a very important event because it involves all of USP’s units and, above all, because it brings the University closer to society, one of the pillars of our mission. The scale it has reached in recent years demonstrates this importance. During the Fair, we have the opportunity to interact with tens of thousands of young people, as well as their families, seeking to advise them on the best possible way to plan their future,” says Professor Marli Quadros Leite, USP’s Prorector of Culture and University Extension.
With twice as many pavilions as in the previous edition, this year several improvements have been made to cater for visitors. In Praça do Relógio, an architectural landmark and symbol of the University, the fair brings together stands with USP students and teachers who will present careers and answer questions about the courses on offer, the professions, the job market, academic training, subjects and syllabuses, as well as everyday university life and the possibilities for specializations. There will also be presentations and activities on a central stage.
Visitors will be able to find out more about how to get into the university and the programs and scholarships that encourage students to stay on. Fuvest will be on hand to assist those interested in applying for USP’s 2024 entrance exam. Teachers will also be able to find out about the extension courses offered by the University, many of which are free.
The Giro Cultural sightseeing tour will take you around the campus in a bus.
Some activities will be made available later on the YouTube channel.
For food, the 2023 edition will have double the structure for food trucks, with two food courts. Special parking spaces will be set aside for buses.
Interactive activities
To help students choose a profession, USP’s Instituto de Psicologia (IP) is organizing career guidance workshops, which will be held directly at the unit itself.
There will also be interactive activities and chat rooms, exhibitions of USP museum collections, lectures and presentations:
– The Show de Física (Physics show), created over 39 years ago to show curious and amusing experiments to encourage the formation of new scientists;
– The activities of the group Química em Ação (Chemistry in action), made up of students and teachers from the Chemistry Institute who use theater and philosophy to tell stories in a didactic and interactive way;
– The Célula Gigante (Giant cell), developed by the Centro de Estudos do Genoma Humano at USP’s Instituto de Biociências, makes it possible to see the inside of a cell with all its organelles, nucleus, apparatus Golgi, mitochondria and others in a structure measuring 40 cubic meters.
The Choice of Profession
One of USP’s largest and most traditional events in the area of outreach and relations with society, the Feira USP e as Profissões has been marked for 20 years by the intense participation of young people in search of their professional future.
In 2022, the event welcomed 66,408 visitors from 27 Brazilian states and 16 other countries. Of this audience, 88.43% were high school students and 4.96% were studying at pre-university courses. 49% came from public schools and 51% from private schools.
The prorector Marli Quadros Leite emphasizes the importance of students making direct contact with the University at an event of this size.
The Feira USP e as Profissões is yet another strategy to democratize the free public university, as it shows that everyone can and should have access to one of the best universities in the world,” says Leite.
The event
The Feira USP e as Profissões is a completely free event and is part of the “USP e as Profissões” Program, which also organizes guided tours of the teaching units throughout the year.
The first edition took place in 2001 on the Ribeirão Preto campus. Until 2019, different USP campuses in the countryside held annual editions on a rotating basis. In the capital, the event has been held annually since 2006. After a period at the Butantã campus, the event was held from 2014 to 2019 at USP’s Parque de Ciência e Tecnologia (CienTec). In 2020 and 2021, with the COVID-19 pandemic, the editions went online and in 2022 it returned to the University City.
According to USP’s yearbook, updated in 2022, 333 undergraduate courses are offered in the capital and in the interior of the state, as well as 428 master’s programs and 394 doctoral programs, with 60,120 students enrolled in undergraduate programs and 29,430 in postgraduate programs, divided into 13,912 master’s students and 15,518 doctoral students. Of these numbers, plus the 7,808 special subjects students, 47.86% are women and 52.14% are men.
