On Monday, April 1st, the Centro MariAntonia da USP will host the Cordão da Mentira starting at 5 pm, with the theme of 2024 “From Coup to Coup: there lies a body lying on the ground.” The cultural center is the meeting point for the Cordão, with music and tributes, followed by a procession that will continue to the Memorial da Resistência, in downtown São Paulo.
The carnival act brings together artists, activists, and social movements on April 1st, April Fools’ Day and the day of the 1964 Coup, to denounce the lies that make up contemporary Brazil and the massacres against the Brazilian people in the past and present.
This year, the Cordão will take to the streets with a dual challenge: it will commemorate the 60th anniversary of the 1964 coup and the attempted coup of 2023. At the same time, it will denounce the continuity of killings by the Brazilian state in the peripheries, rural areas, and Brazilian forests throughout the country’s democratization process. The plot will also highlight the horror of the Palestinian genocide and its relationship to killings in our peripheries, discuss the violence and racist selectivity of mass incarceration, and pay tribute to militants of Brazilian social struggles, who will be present at the event. Finally, it will highlight the struggle of movements of relatives against state violence throughout Brazil, pointing to Operation Escudo / Operation Verão and its dozens of executions.
The musical section of the Cordão this year will be composed of important musicians from São Paulo such as Douglas Germano, Roberta Oliveira, Bel Borges, Renato Martins, Selito SD, and other samba musicians from various groups. It will also feature a heavyweight team in musical accompaniment. As always, there will be various theatrical and visual interventions along the parade route.
Between 4 pm and 7 pm, the exhibitions at MariAntonia will be open for visitation, with free admission.
