Pró-Reitoria de Cultura e Extensão Universitária - 02/24/2023

The March screenings are part of the calendar for the 30th anniversary of cinematographic activities

By Fabio Rubira

The Cinema da USP (Cinusp) will present “Mitos e Lendas” from February 27 to March 19, highlighting the role of narratives in collective feelings and worldviews in various cultures.

The program includes 15 productions from Europe, Asia, Africa, and South America. These are films that are a century old, such as the German “Die Nibelungen” released in 1924 by Fritz Lang about the Nordic legend of a dwarf people, to the Peruvian “La teta asustada” (2009) by Claudia Llosa, with the story of a young girl who has a disease transmitted through breast milk by mothers who have been raped.

In “The Green Snake” (Hong Kong, 1933) a monk who has sworn to destroy all non-human spirits encounters entities that offer no danger and take the form of beautiful women who seek to experience carnal feelings such as love and desire.

Pier Paolo Pasolini’s “Edipo Re” (1967) presents a new version of the Greek myth in the Italy of the 1920s and 1960s.

Another highlight is the documentary “Samba da Criação do Mundo” (1979), by filmmaker Vera de Figueiredo which shows carnival director Joãozinho Trinta’s first victory with Beija-Flor de Nilópolis.
