The University of São Paulo is now accepting applications for the 2024 edition of the São Paulo Chemistry Olympiad, a knowledge competition aimed at high school students from public and private schools. The first stage consists of submitting an essay that must discuss the theme “Chemistry in the fight against Fake News”. Registration is free, and essays are submitted online through the website app.fuvest.br until March 15th.

Organized for 27 years, the São Paulo Chemistry Olympiad awards and selects dozens of students annually for the national stage of the event, which in turn is the gateway to the International Olympiad and the Ibero-American Olympiad.
According to Professor Mauro Bertotti, a faculty member at the Institute of Chemistry (IQ) at USP and one of the event’s coordinators, the São Paulo Chemistry Olympiad has three main objectives.

“One of them is to demonstrate to high school students that chemistry is an interesting science and that it can bring benefits to society. The second is to identify students who have a facility in the area and who can, at a later stage, participate in the national edition and international competitions. The last objective is to create a link between USP and high schools in São Paulo, especially public schools.”
150 students will be selected through the essays, joining others who have participated in different processes, totaling about 300 participants in the final phase. The other processes can be consulted on the Chemistry Olympiad website. Here.

Final
The final phase consists of a knowledge test that will take place on June 8th, starting at 9 a.m., at the Institute of Chemistry at USP.
“It is done in video form, and students need to describe what happens in the experiments and develop answers based on the questions formulated by the Chemistry Olympiad board,” informs Bertotti.

The top performers receive medals and cash prizes. 120 medals and 20 cash prizes will be distributed, ten for each category – second and third year of high school. The prizes will be awarded to the first, second, and third place winners, students and teachers from public schools, and women with the highest scores.
Throughout the day, the Institute of Chemistry offers various activities for students, parents, and teachers, such as lectures, laboratory tours, and a chemistry show.
The award ceremony will be held in the late afternoon of June 8th at the Camargo Guarnieri Cultural Center, Butantã campus of USP.
Public Schools
This year, the São Paulo Chemistry Olympiad has developed several actions in favor of public school students, such as the highest number of candidates called for the final phase, reinforcement classes for those selected in this phase, and a differentiated award.
One of the ways to access undergraduate studies at USP is through knowledge competitions. Participants in this and other competitions can enter directly without the need for a entrance exam. Learn more in the USP Journal article.
Organized by the Institute of Chemistry (IQ) at USP and the São Paulo regional branch of the Brazilian Chemical Society (ABQ-SP), the São Paulo Chemistry Olympiad is supported by the Pro-Rectorate for Culture and University Extension, the Pro-Rectorate for Undergraduate Studies, both from USP, Fuvest, and the São Paulo State Department of Education.
