The Nascente program celebrated its 30th edition last Friday (November 24), highlighting the diversity of artistic works by undergraduate and graduate students at USP. This year’s edition received 787 submissions in the categories of Performing Arts, Visual Arts, Audiovisual, Design, Classical Music, Popular Music, and Text.
The award ceremony at the Camargo Guarnieri Cultural Center, located in the University City, featured a tribute to Professor Ana Mae Barbosa. The former director of the Museum of Contemporary Art (MAC) at USP recalled the tenure of her husband, João Alexandre Barbosa, at the Pro-Rectorate for Culture and University Extension. Professor Barbosa, who passed away in 2006, was responsible for creating Nascente, with its first award presented in 1991.
“He was a visionary who believed in the power of the creative process. Hence, he employed all possible forces, obtained sponsorship, etc.,” stated Ana Mae. “The Nascente project still exists today, persists, and is successful thanks to the multiplicity of talent that each of us has, that every young person has, that every student at this University has. So, long live the multiplicity of young talent, which should be explored and nurtured.”
The pioneer in Brazilian art education continued by asserting that it is possible “to be a doctor but also be a painter.” She emphasized that “the arts are crucial not only for the development of creativity but for human happiness.”
The professor also suggested the creation of a new award, considering the “new forms of art that are emerging,” specifically mentioning street art with the work of muralists.
“I fondly remember all the editions of Nascente in which I participated, even after the death of my husband. And I am thankful for this continuity. Nascente will always be Nascente. Artists are born every day at this University,” she concluded.

Professor Marli Quadros Leite, Pro-Rector for Culture and University Extension, thanked the presence of João Alexandre Barbosa’s family at the event and the judges in various categories. She emphasized the consolidation of the project, with expectations of new participants next year. “One Nascente ends, and we begin another.”
She also suggested visiting the Nascente Visuality exhibition at the Centro Maria Antonia of USP until January 28. “Everyone is invited to attend and participate in this experience, which is the correct word to define it; the experimentation of artistic creation.”
