Juçara Marçal and Neymar Dias are special guests of the USP Symphony Orchestra in November

Comunicação - PRCEU - 11/07/2023

With a focus on diversity, Juçara Marçal opens the month’s concerts and participates in a debate on the topic. Neymar Dias brings the versatility of his work, which moves from country roots, urban roots and erudite works

The University of São Paulo Symphony Orchestra (Osusp) opens its November 2023 schedule with two new free concerts. The next presentation, part of the Concerts at the Clock Tower cycle, will take place this Saturday, November 11, at 4:00 PM, at the Camargo Guarnieri Cultural Center. The guest artist is singer Juçara Marçal, performing solo, under the direction of conductor André Bachur. Admission is free, and tickets can be acquired in advance on the appticket platform.

The program has the theme “Respect for Diversity,” featuring songs that span from the African matrix to MPB (Brazilian Popular Music). Inspired by typical instruments of the Pernambuco maracatu, it will feature the world premiere of “Massapê de Gonguê Abe” by Rodrigo Lima. Works by Clarice Assad, Milton Nascimento, Caetano Veloso, Chico César, Siba Veloso, Rodrigo Campos, Kiko Dinucci, and Juçara Marçal herself complete the program.

In 2022, Juçara Marçal was nominated for the Latin Grammy in the category of Best Rock or Alternative Music Album in Portuguese for “Delta Estácio Blues.”

The Concerts at the Clock Tower cycle combines lectures by experts with high-quality musical performances, merging knowledge and art in diverse formats. In this context, the musical experience will be complemented by a conversation with Marçal, who holds a master’s degree in Literature and a bachelor’s degree in Journalism from the University of São Paulo, with Professor Silvana Nascimento from the Department of Anthropology at the Faculty of Philosophy, Letters, and Human Sciences. The discussion will cover topics related to anti-racism and LGBTQIAPN+, and it will be mediated by Professor Marli Quadros Leite, the pro-rector for culture and university extension at USP.

New Presentation

On November 17, Friday, at noon, the guest artist will be the multi-instrumentalist Neymar Dias, in a performance of original compositions and arrangements. The presentation, part of the Diversity in Chamber Music cycle, spans various musical styles that have defined the artist’s musical career. The event, at the Camargo Guarnieri Cultural Center, is also free of charge.

The concert, conducted without a conductor, takes a journey through the musical versatility of Dias, starting with his Brazilian “viola caipira.” It encompasses popular music, classical music, Brazilian rural roots with works by Tião Carreiro and Angelino de Oliveira, orchestral music with Bach and Villa Lobos, and urban music. The presentation will be held in collaboration with the Osusp Ensemble.

Neymar Dias, who holds a degree in composition and conducting from the Faculty of Arts Alcântara Machado (FAAM) in São Paulo, has been part of various orchestras, including Osusp and the Orquestra Experimental de Repertório. In 2014, he was nominated alongside Toninho Ferragutti for the Latin Grammy in the Best Root Music Album category for “Festa na Roça.”

For both presentations, Osusp suggests the donation of non-perishable food items, which will be sent to communities in the Butantã neighborhood.
