Senior citizens to choose from thousands of seats available on free courses and activities at USP

Comunicação - PRCEU - 07/16/2019

The USP Open to Seniors Citizens Program turns 25 years old and offers about 4,600 regular and complementary seats

Registration starts July 22nd in the second half of 2019 for activities of the USP Open to Senior Citizens Program. On its 51st edition, the free initiative, held in the capital and inland campuses, offers 4560 seats divided into regular USP undergraduate classes, and complementary activities, which include courses, lectures, field trips, sports, and didactic-cultural practices. Applicants are not required to have a university connection and must be over 60 years old.

Comunicação Interna e Cultura Organizacional (Internal Communication and Organizational Culture), Jornalismo Esportivo (Sports Journalism), Empreendedorismo e Modelos de Negócios (Entrepreneurship and Business Models), Ações Educativas na Prática de Enfermagem (Educational Actions in Nursing Practice), Hidráulica (Hydraulics), Produção Audiovisual em Comunicação Digital (Audiovisual Production in Digital Communication), Noções e Desenho Técnico de Instalações Industriais (Notions and Technical Design of Industrial Facilities), Princípios de Gestão da Produção (Principles of Production Management) e Logística (Logistics) are among the 252 courses available, which are taught at USP campuses in Bauru, Lorena, Piracicaba, Pirassununga, Ribeirão Preto, São Carlos and São Paulo. For most of the classes, no previous knowledge is required.

Senior sports activities such as Liang Gong [Chinese Body Practice], Ginástica Adaptada (Adapted Gymnastics), Técnicas Meditativas (Meditative Techniques), Alongamento (Stretching), Pilates, and Yoga are also offered. Besides, cultural activities will be provided with specialists from various areas, such as Belly Dance, Memory Workshops, Craftsmanship, Theater, as well as viola, guitar, piano, electric guitar, singing, and music theory classes. In all, 113 cultural and sports programs are available, which together with regular courses accounts for 365 options for the 60+ public.

At the same time that it provides a generational exchange with USP students, the program is positioned as a discussion center on the subject of aging, with activities and partnerships that go beyond the disciplines specifically open to this public.

“This semester, in addition to the courses offered, we will hold meetings to discuss topics related to aging. The intention is to further expand our insertion in society. The meetings will be held in partnership with USP’s Maria Antonia University Center (Ceuma) and Unibes Cultural. Memory, meditation, prejudice, palliative care, and financial capital are among the planned activities”, says physician Egídio Dórea, program coordinator.

Besides partnerships, Usp Open to  Senior Citizens  Program holds the 1st edition of the contest and photo exhibition: O Olhar do 60 + (The 60+ Look).  To be eligible, one must be over 60 years old and live in São Paulo. Call for entries is open for submissions from July 19th to August 19th, exclusively over the internet through the website prceu.usp.br/3idade. Successful photographers will be awarded an exhibition at the Maria Antonia University Center.

Created by Professor Ecléa Bosi in 1994, the program, which completed 25 years of uninterrupted activities, is an initiative of the Office of the Provost for Culture and Extension at USP.
