Exhibition explores Mozambique Portuguese and other languages of the African country

Comunicação - PRCEU - 05/02/2023

The exhibition presents to the public different aspects of Mozambican Portuguese, such as history, grammar, vocabulary, and relationship with other languages

By Sandra Lima

The Centro MariAntonia of USP opens, on June 1st, at 7 pm, the exhibition O Português de Moçambique no caleidoscópio (The Portuguese of Mozambique in the kaleidoscope), with maps, graphics, photographs, cartoons, audio recordings, and posters. The exhibition is a partnership between the Chair of Portuguese as a Second and Foreign Language of the  Universidade Eduardo Mondlane (UEM) (UEM) of Mozambique and the Pro-Rectory of Culture and University Extension of USP, curated by designer Vincent Caudry and coordinated by professors Inês Machungo and Perpétua Gonçalves, from the Mozambican institution. Admission is free and visitation is held from Tuesday to Sunday and holidays, from 10 am to 6 pm.

In order to disseminate information about different aspects of the Portuguese language in Mozambique (such as history, grammar, vocabulary, and relations with other languages), the exhibition arrives in Brazil at the invitation of the professors of the Faculdade de Filosofia, Letras e Ciências Humanas (FFLCH)  of USP, Olga Coelho and Esmeralda Negrão.

On June 1 and 2, starting at 4 pm, there will be a cycle of lectures with several guests with a conference by Conceição Evaristo (USP and Itaú Cultural), and discussion tables with Carlos Alberto Faraco (UFPR), Margarida Petter (USP), Perpétua Gonçalves (UEM, Mozambique), Rodrigo Madrid (IFPI) and Evani Viotti (USP) coordinated by professors Olga Coelho and Esmeralda Negrão. The themes cover studies developed in Brazil and Africa, on Portuguese and African languages.

The pro-rector of Culture and University Extension at USP, Marli Quadros Leite, points out that “the exhibition and conferences strengthen the partnership between the institutions and shed light on the variety of academic studies of Portuguese and African languages, as well as their cultural richness”.

The exhibition is part of a set of initiatives aimed at the study and dissemination of Transatlantic Linguistic History, developed by the Documentation Center in Linguistic Historiography of the Department of Linguistics of FFLCH, by the Institute of Advanced Studies (IEA) of USP, and by the CNPq research group called Laboratório de Estudos Linguísticos Transatlânticos (LELT). It is supported by the Center for African Studies, the Department of Linguistics, and the Graduate Program in Linguistics at USP.
