From April 3 to 6, the international symposium on production studies: architecture, design and the construction site will take place. The event is part of the project “Traduzindo Ferro/ Transformando Conhecimentos em Arquitetura, Projeto e Trabalho para um novo campo de Estudos da Produção” (TF/TK), which was born out of an international partnership between the Instituto de Arquitetura e Urbanismo (IAU) at the Universidade de São Paulo/FAPESP and the School of Architecture and Planning at Newcastle University/Arts and Humanities Research Council in the UK, aimed at translating and editing Sérgio Ferro’s written work in English.
As such, it dialogues with the general purpose of contributing to the consolidation of another approach to architecture, which, roughly speaking, focuses on the historical-social “production” of built things and no longer on the buildings themselves; on their material and human forces, rather than on their design or formal framework; on the contradictions between form and materiality, between product and production process and no longer on their supposed reconciling syntheses, crystallized in the works.
The symposium at USP’s Centro MariAntônia, in partnership with the postgraduate programs at IAU and FAU, both at USP, will be open to the public and will bring together in person these efforts to recover “Production Studies” in their intellectual and practical power, that is, in what they can contribute both to the deepening of architectural research through prisms derived from the theory of value, and to its practical, ethical and political dimension, that is, as an ingredient in the transformation of the technical and social division of labor.
In the same week, there will be other activities for the TF/TK team: the V Workshop with affiliated researchers on April 3 at the Faculdade de Arquitetura e Urbanismo (FAU) and some optional visits on April 5 and 6.
Also on the program of the international symposium on production studies: architecture, design and building sites at USP’s Centro MariAntonia, architect and artist Sergio Ferro will give a lecture entitled “Notas sobre arquitetura. Ecletismo e modernismo” on Tuesday, April 4, at 6pm, with free admission.
