A ceremony held on the evening of February 22nd marked the graduation of extension students from the Hospital for Rehabilitation of Craniofacial Anomalies (HRAC/Centrinho) of the University of São Paulo (USP).

Held at the USP Bauru University Theater, the ceremony included the symbolic delivery of course completion certificates and the participation of students’ families.

Among the graduates were the students of the first class of Medical Residency in Anesthesiology, which began in 2021 with the support of the philanthropic organization Smile Train – a partner of HRAC-USP – through the granting of scholarships to residents.

Technical and Human Learning

In her speech, the acting deputy superintendent of HRAC-USP, Dr. Cleide Felício de Carvalho Carrara, highlighted that the date was a celebration, marking the conclusion of 17 different courses by 85 students. “HRAC’s trajectory in the field of education dates back to the mid-1970s, with dental residency, of which I am proud to have been a Pediatric Dentistry student in 1986 and 1987,” she recalled.

The acting superintendent thanked the professors of the Dentistry, Speech Therapy, and Medicine courses at the Bauru School of Dentistry (FOB-USP), who kindly collaborate as coordinators of the different teaching programs of the Hospital, and the HRAC-USP employees, highly qualified professionals responsible for being alongside the students as preceptors in the clinical care of patients.

“Our special thanks to the Pro-Rectorate for Culture and University Extension of USP, represented by the pro-rector Marli Quadros Leite, for the constant support in the management and implementation of HRAC’s extension courses,” she added.

Cleide Carrara concluded her speech with a message to the graduates. “I hope you have had the opportunity to experience not only technical learning here but also human learning. Our patients, coming from all Brazilian states, find in Bauru the hope of a better future. I have no doubt that each of you will take with you not only a professional experience but also a life experience. The feeling is one of pride for our Hospital’s contribution to your education.”

Next, a video message from Professor Marli Quadros Leite, pro-rector for Culture and University Extension of USP, was broadcasted. “It is with great satisfaction that I congratulate each of you for reaching this significant moment in your academic trajectories. May the knowledge acquired at this renowned Rehabilitation Center be the solid foundation for future successes in your careers. Congratulations for all the dedication that results in achievements like the one you have just reached,” she wished the graduates.

Professor Renato Yassutaka Faria Yaedú, president of the HRAC-USP Culture and Extension University Commission and professor at the Department of Surgery of FOB-USP, congratulated the graduates for all the effort, dedication, and sacrifice to learn and become professionals with ethical values, technical skills, and scientific knowledge, emphasizing that the date marks the completion of one of the most important stages of their professional lives.

“I also congratulate the families for believing in their children and being the foundation that encouraged them to be here and to follow through to the end of this long path. Today you have proof that the mission is accomplished. You are delivering to society a trained and skilled professional to care for their patients. I thank everyone who makes this magic happen in the lives of these young professionals: coordination, tutors, preceptors, and all the professionals and employees who directly and indirectly participate in their training,” he pointed out.

Renato Yaedú concluded his speech wishing the graduates much success. “May you take with you all the teachings and use them wisely, doing your best for and with your patients. I hope to hear and follow your achievements, transforming the places where you go and sharing all the knowledge, love, and humanism learned here.”

Dr. Nivaldo Alonso, Chief of Craniofacial Surgery, coordinator of the Medical Residency in Craniomaxillofacial Surgery and the Professional Practice in Cleft Lip and Palate and Craniofacial Anomalies at HRAC-USP, and professor in the Plastic Surgery Discipline at the School of Medicine of the University of São Paulo (FMUSP), from the capital, said: “this is a very special night. We are very pleased to be here and see you together with your families enjoying this moment. I consider this medical residency and this professional practice the end of an era and the beginning of your professional lives. It is a huge step, and I hope you have taken full advantage of this opportunity within this craniofacial surgery center, undoubtedly one of the best training centers in the areas of dentistry, otorhinolaryngology, plastic surgery, and craniofacial surgery.”

Also representing the NGO Smile Train, of which he is a member of the Global Medical Advisory Council and director of the Medical Advisory Council in Brazil, Nivaldo Alonso noted that the organization has been a partner of HRAC-USP since 2017 and actively participates in the institution’s education processes, focusing on the development of professionals qualified to treat craniofacial anomalies, with an emphasis on cleft lip and palate.

“This moment is very unique for you, and I would like to wish you good luck and much success in your journeys. I would also like to thank everyone who contributed to your training and the structure offered by Centrinho,” he concluded.

Representing the Multiprofessional Residency Program in Auditory Health at HRAC-USP and professor at the Speech Therapy Department of FOB-USP, Professor Natália Barreto Frederigue Lopes, said that this conclusion values formation and teamwork, with complementary experiences and skills, sharing common goals and making combined efforts for health promotion, treatment, and rehabilitation.

“You are now facing new challenges and opportunities. We wish you success and are proud to see you capable of contributing to health and improving the quality of life for many people. Be committed, loving, and dedicated to forging a successful path in the chosen specialty. Go beyond what you have learned here. The supreme guide of each of you should always be your conscience. In it are deposited experiences, vocation, the will to serve, the determination to overcome limits. Associate it with the need for constant technical improvement and study and the pursuit of updating. Congratulations to the graduates,” she said, representing the coordinators of the extension courses at HRAC-USP.

The opening table of the ceremony also included two graduates. “Despite the differences, I believe that we all have something in common. There was a reason that was the fuel for us to be here today. For some, it was a dream, for others a challenge, one more step in the resume. But since we first entered through the gates of HRAC, the biggest gain has been human. We have learned more than a specialty; we have had personal and intimate growth with the care we can offer, each in their own way,” said dentist Thaisa do Nascimento Dias, a graduate of the Multiprofessional Residency Program in Syndromes and Craniofacial Anomalies, representing the students in the area of Cleft Lip and Palate and Craniofacial Anomalies at HRAC-USP.

“Some of us have come from far away, we have put a lot in our baggage, and now this moment has come that we are experiencing tonight. I can only thank those great supporters who welcomed us and helped us, our family, our friends, and colleagues. Thank you very much and I wish my colleagues a bright future,” she said.

Psychologist Giovana Orru Tiengo, a graduate of the Multiprofessional Residency Program in Auditory Health, highlighted that “tonight is the realization of what was once a distant dream” and drew an analogy between the experience in these years of specialization and the song “Sujeito de Sorte” by Belchior.

“‘Presently, I can consider myself a lucky person.’ And I can confidently confirm: the experience of being able to work in a service of notable national and international credibility, with uniquely competent professionals and accompanied by exceptional co-workers, is indeed proof that we are lucky subjects. ‘Because although I am very young, I feel sane, safe, and strong.’ In the beginning, we were still crawling towards a universe of personal and professional maturity. And even though there are many paths to be taken, for all the knowledge learned, applied, and taught, we have become sane. For every demand met, story heard, heart cherished, from handshake to hugs and shared gifts, we have always been safe. And for fully dedicating ourselves to our patients and growing together as professionals, in the ease and difficulties, we have become strong. ‘And I have thought to myself, God is Brazilian and walks by my side.’ Regardless of religion or belief, it is undeniable that the energy when attending to the target population of the Hospital and the University is immeasurably sublime, strengthening our faith in the dedicated work of caring, nurturing, and loving others,” she said.

“And even though within this period, countless times we have ‘bled too much’ and ‘cried like a dog’ over professional and personal impasses and tribulations, the ‘years past’ have literally passed, and ‘this year’ not only have we graduated as specialist professionals, but we can also consider ourselves lucky subjects.’ I thank the entire HRAC team for every moment of learning and support on this journey,” concluded Giovana, representing the students in the Auditory Health area at HRAC-USP.
