Curated by pianist Dante Pignatari, the program A matemática dos afetos is made up of concerts and begins the musical program of USP’s Centro Cultural MariAntonia.
By Sandra Lima / Arte: Ana Vieira.
On April 20, at 5pm, Centro MariAntonia da USP will inaugurate the program A matemática dos afetos: um painel da música medieval e barroca, which will take place every two weeks in 2023, always on Thursdays. Pianist Dante Pignatari, curator of the Cycle, will present the inaugural concert on the keyboard music of Johann Sebastian Bach. Admission is free and open to anyone interested. Tickets will be distributed one hour in advance.
The title of the program refers to the configuration of modes (scales) used in Greek music, the cradle of Western music. Formulated mathematically by Pythagoras, the configuration of modes shows the symbiotic relationship that music had with poetry, which also permeated the musical conception of the Middle Ages. Pignatari explains that “the liturgical chant of the Catholic Church is the medieval manifestation of the Greek concept of melody, the union of word and music”.
The series is structured in three blocks of five performances. After the inaugural class with Pignatari, harpsichordist Pedro Augusto Diniz will coordinate and present the five performances in May and June, ranging from the late 12th century and the repertoire of the Notre-Dame school to the 17th century, the Italian madrigal and the culmination of this whole era with the creations of composers Orlando de Lassus and Giovanni Palestrina.
From August onwards, the second block will be coordinated by Marília Vargas, who brings us the recitar cantando, the sung vocal melody that takes place in opera and song. Closing the cycle, Monica Lucas, a professor at USP’s Escola de Comunicações e Artes (ECA), will coordinate five concert classes dedicated to instrumental music.
