Harvard professor presents his book at MariAntonia

Comunicação - PRCEU - 07/28/2023

The Centro MariAntonia of USP promotes, on August 8, starting at 6:30 pm, the visit of Patricio del Real, a professor at Harvard University, who will present his book Constructing Latin America. Architecture, Politics, and Race at the Museum of Modern Art, a look at how the treatment of Latin American architecture by the Museum of Modern Art in New York promoted US political, economic, and cultural interests.

José Lira, professor at the Faculdade de Arquitetura e Urbanismo (FAU) of USP and director of the Centro MariAntonia, will also participate as a debater, and the architect and doctoral student Victor Próspero, as moderator.

Book Summary
In the interwar period and immediately after World War II, the US government promoted the vision of a modern, progressive, and democratic Latin America and worked to present the region as a partner in the fight against fascism and communism. This was reinforced by many institutions, including the Museum of Modern Art in New York. Using modern architecture to imagine a Latin America under US leadership in the postwar era, MoMA presented highly successful exhibitions such as Brazil Builds (1943) and Latin American Architecture since 1945 (1955), which employed a racially coded aesthetic and emphasized the confluence of “Americanness” and “modernity” in a globalized world. Delving into the heated debates of the period, presenting never-before-published internal documents and photographs from the museum and the Nelson A. Rockefeller archives, Patricio del Real is the first to fully address MoMA’s role in U.S. cultural imperialism and its aftermath through the exhibitions on Latin American art and architecture.
