Free Dissemination Course about wattle and daub construction technique

Assessoria Interior USP - 06/30/2023

The Comissão de Cultura e Extensão of IAU-USP informs that on July 17, 18 and 19, 2023, and August 5, 2023, at 8 a.m. to 6 p.m., the Diffusion Course “Canteiro Escola: Taipa de mão aplicado à edificação do Grupo Habis Modulo 2 – Trama, Barreamento e Covestimento” will be offered.

Course objectives: To experience the practice of the execution of Japanese wattle and daub and Brazilian wattle and daub.

This course is about the the construction technique known as “taipa de mão” (wattle and daub), one of the traditional construction techniques used in Brazil. Today, despite its potential, it is very little used and holds images of construction with little durability and refers to the condition of poverty and precariousness. In the current context of climate emergency, this technique has very favorable characteristics with less impact on the environment. Its composition is based on local materials such as bamboo, earth, and vegetable fibers associated with the structure of sawn wood. There are constructions made by Japanese immigrants, in the Municipality of Registro – SP, that present an exceptional quality where some houses built are more than 100 years old and still in use today. The reason for this durability lies in the way of execution based on the ancient knowledge of Japanese rammed earth adapted to local conditions and materials found in the region. The “taipa de mão” can be one of the important constructive options provided that due care is taken in its execution that goes through the executive detailing, adequate preparation of the land, wood, bamboo, and its application in layers: barreling, regularization, and finishing.

The course is aimed at:  General public, students, and researchers from the fields of architecture, construction, engineering, and construction workers.
